Coffee brew ratio calculator

The brew ratio is the weight of water, or of espresso in the cup, for each gram of coffee. Pick the value you want to find, enter the other two, and the answer updates as you type.

Use a preset as a starting point, then let taste decide. A shorter ratio such as 1:15 makes a stronger cup than 1:17.

Calculate

Water or yield

320 g

20 g of coffee to 320 g of water or yield is a 1:16 ratio.

How it works

Water (g) = coffee (g) × ratio. Coffee = water ÷ ratio. Ratio = water ÷ coffee.

For filter coffee, the water is what you pour, not what ends up in the cup. The grounds keep roughly twice their weight, so 320 g of water with 20 g of coffee gives about 280 g of coffee to drink.

For espresso, weigh the shot in the cup instead. An 18 g dose at 1:2 means you stop the shot at about 36 g.
